Big day in the Big City!

As you can tell from this blog title the class had an exciting day out in the Big City! Unfortunately it wasn't New York City but it was London, so it still had the same hectic amount of people going to work. We'd been sent to head to London to go visit National Portrait Gallery.

Getting on the train was thankfully hassle free and after eating our WHSmith lunch, we quickly arrived at London Waterloo. With our iphones and google maps to help us, it thankfully didn't take us long to find our destination. We walked in and searched the signs to find Elizabeth I. After spending half an hour searching many rooms, I was getting frustrated that we hadn't seen any paintings of Elizabeth. I asked one of the members of the staff politely if he could direct us to this section. Keeping his cool, he responded that we wouldn't find any Elizabeth I paintings here because it was The National Gallery. After feeling rather embarrassed, we quickly moved on to the right galley.

We entered into the Elizabethan room and quickly saw numerous paintings of Elizabeth and other higher figures during her time as Queen. Researching Queen Elizabeth you tend to see the same paintings of her. But one painting that has always stood out to me is the painting called 'The Coronation portrait'.

What caught my attention numerous times about this painting, is the way the Queen's face has been painted. You can clearly tell it is Elizabeth but her facial features look so odd and it almost doesn't look human. But with it's simple feature, I think it really shows off the make-up for what it really was back in 16th Century.
